Countess Lavinia Waldorf-Carlton is a short, elderly, rich woman. She is dressed flamboyantly and is stuffed with makeup; so much that it chips off when she speaks, and falls on to her fur collar.
Description[]
Some weeks after coming to America, she met Sterling Waldorf-Carlton, the former president of the Leyendecker Museum in an off-shore casino (where she claims drinking is legal). They married one month later.
She doesn't get enough from her new marriage and has extra-marital affairs. She has some business with the Speakeasy Flapper in the Harlem Swinger, who waits for her in the ladies' lounge. The Countess lives her life to the fullest and is overenthusiastic, which scares Rameses Najeer. She has a bad relationship with Dr. Olympia Myklos, since she screamed when she saw Myklos's collection of dead rats, and Myklos's ferret, Daisy, bit her ankle.
Her husband died two months after their marriage. His fortune went to the estate, but the Countess claims he was writing a new will to leave his fortune to her.
Steve Dorian spots her picking up Archibald Carrington III in her car.
Act II[]
The Countess is first seen at the Leyendecker Museum charity party. She theorizes to Najeer that the Dagger of Amon Ra burglary was committed by an Egyptian Sun Worshiper, but Najeer seems is skeptical about it. While they have a disagreement, she's convinced that her sources are never wrong. She then has a short conversation with Ziggy about a deal.
She then meets with Olympia and Yvette Delacroix to tell her story about how she met her late husband Sterling on a casino ship offshore for legal drinking and gambling. The Countess also talks about the legal problems surrounding Sterling's Will, who was in the process of changing it before he died.
Act III[]
The Countess can be seen occasionally wandering the museum, and she doesn't interact much with the rest of the characters. However, a meeting is scheduled between her, Dr. Carrington and Ziggy at the Medieval Armor Exhibit at 1:00 PM. Unknown to her, she would be the only person alive to attend the meeting.
She enters the room while carrying a painting with her. If Laura Bow catches the Countess, she will pop out of the tapestry and confront the Countess about her meeting. After some tough questioning, the Countess confesses that she and Dr. Carrington arranged an art burglary scheme. An art forger would create duplicates of paintings on the wall of the Old Masters Gallery, replace the real ones with the fake ones, and then sell the real ones to private collectors. To cover their tracks, they would have vandalized the fake ones to make it seem like the real ones were destroyed.
Laura then has the option to interrogate the Countess about Sterling Waldorf-Carlton's diary. Sterling's writing express his fear that the Countess only married him for his money and that she maybe trying to kill him. The diary ends by saying Yvette fears her too. The Countess denies these accusations, proclaiming her love for her late husband and denouncing Yvette for seeing him behind her back.
Act IV[]
The Countess can be seen occasionally wandering the museum.
Between 3:00 to 3:15 PM, Olympia enters her office to discover the Countess dying and tied up on her desk. Close examination reveals a pale complexion on her face, with Olympia noting that she doesn't look too well. The Countess uses her remaining breath to mutter Detective O'Riley's name before Olympia wanders off to find him.
Laura enters the office to investigate the situation, only to encounter Olympia's pet cobra Barney, who was let loose from his cage. With the help of some snake oil and a snake lasso, Laura gets the cobra back into his cage. Unfortunately, the Countess is already dead.
Act VI[]
During the Coroner's Inquest, it was discovered that Detective Ryan O'Riley murdered Countess Lavinia Waldorf-Carlton by tying her up on Olympia's desk and letting loose the pet cobra, who bit her on the ankle and injected venom into her. The Countess was killed for her association with Watney Little (who was posing as Dr. Carrington and was in on the dagger's theft) and Ziggy (who knew about the dagger's theft). While it's unknown if she actually knew anything, she wasn't well known for keeping secrets.
It was also revealed that the Countess was the woman involved in the art burglary scheme with Watney and Ziggy.
The Countess's Epilogue[]
Having died from a snakebite, the Countess Lavinia Waldorf-Carlton did not live long enough to inherit any money from her last husband, Sterling.
The Countess's Unused Dialogue[]
- (Ask about Press Pass) Well, isn't that CHAHMING! A little reporter!
- (Ask about Work Boot) I try to avoid labor and laborers of all kinds, dear girl.
- (Ask about Red Hair) Well, I suppose they could have come from that DREADFUL O'Riley, or that ADORABLE Mr. Dorian.
- (Use Work Boot) Miss Bow, PLEASE take the DREADFUL object away!
- (Use Red Hair) Is that HAIR, Miss Bow? How DREADFUL!
Unused Old Masters Gallery Dialogue[]
- (Ask about Pocket Watch) LB: Does this look familiar?
- WC: It LOOKS like a pocketwatch.
- LB: You'd never guess where I found it.
- WC: In your PURSE?
- LB: In a trunk with a human skeleton. The engraving on the inside of the watch says it belongs to Dr. Archibald Carrington III.
- WC: Dr. Carri...uh, what, uh...
- LB: Having trouble talking?
- WC: I didn't KILL him! WATNEY did it!
- LB: Tell me about it.
- WC: I HIRED Watney to impersonate Carrington! Then Watney KILLED Carrington on the boat during their trip here from England!
- LB: You hired him to kill Dr. Carrington?
- WC: No! That was HIS idea!
- LB: Okay, if Carrington's skeleton is in the trunk, then who's the corpse on the desk in Carrington's office?
- WC: He...oh, God...it's Watney Little! Someone killed WATNEY!
- LB: Someone who thought he was the real Carrington?
- WC: How would I know? I wasn't THERE!
- LB: Who else besides you would have a reason to kill him?
- WC: I don't know! Maybe someone else knew his true identity? Maybe he made someone ANGRY! Maybe he killed HIMSELF!
- LB: I seriously doubt that the man would commit suicide by impaling himself on a porcupine...
- WC: I don't know what to tell you! I don't know who did it! I just know I didn't do it! You must BELIEVE me!
- LB: Hmmmm...
