Posthumous characters refers to characters who are a part of the story or the worldbuilding, but who have died before the story begins. In the Laura Bow series, examples include the Crouton family in The Colonel's Bequest and Sterling Waldorf-Carlton in The Dagger of Amon Ra, but these are far from the only examples.
